Urmia Lake basin has many kind of different green, red and blue algae. High productivity of these algae is a base for the Lake’s food chain.
In Ecological Basin of Urmia Lake , there are 27 species of mammals ,212 species of birds, 41 species of creepers, 7 species of amphibians and 26 species of fishes.
Urmia Lake basin is over-wintering habitat for a large aquatic birds(especially ducks and long-leg birds). Also this lake is a host for large groups of flamingoes and white-pelicans.
Two very rare types of mammals are sheltered and preserved in Urmia Lake islands to reproduce, Yellow Persian deer (Dama mesopotamica) and a kind of sheep (Ovis Orientalis gimelini).
The main important aquatic invertebrate in Urmia Lake is Artemia urmiana. Artemia is a crustacean and one of the main foods for different species of birds like flamingoes.
There are many different wet and dry habitats in Urmia Lake basin.17 critical sites including the lake , some dry habitats and ponds near the lake are the main animal preserving and aiding zones in this basin.
There are also some species of birds which are threatened in Ecological Urmia Lake Basin.
